Billy Miller Obituary

Billy “Bill” Miller, age 82 of Newport, TN, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 26, 2024, in the home he built in 1971. Bill or "Pap" as he was affectionately known by generations of family, friends, and neighborhood children was born on August 7, 1941.

A poor farmer's son growing up in Asheville, N.C., he learned to work hard early in life and passed that characteristic down through three generations. Pap worked for decades building and remodeling houses and stores, installing carpets, owning his own carpet store, and restoring antique cars. He loved antique cars and continuously tinkering on never-ending projects involving them.

Pap enjoyed spending the summers with his grandkids teaching them to swim, the importance of growing their own vegetables, and how to tinker endlessly in the garage, but he also enjoyed the small things in life like relaxing in the sun on the back porch, drinking hot coffee all summer long and watching the grass grow.

He was a faithful Christian of the Baptist Faith, and a member of Unity Baptist Church in Newport, TN. Pap was a man of great intelligence and of few words, but when he spoke you knew to listen. A self-made entrepreneur and mechanic, he could take apart the engine of a broken down antique and have it back together and running like new in no time. Words simply cannot describe the amazing man that was our Pap. To know him was to love him.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Carmon and Ethie Miller; daughter, Cindy Mason; brothers, Bob and Gerald Miller; and infant great-grandchildren, Sydney Mae Miller, Noah Moore, and twins, Maddison Jade and Karoline Grace Miller.

Left to carry on his legacy is the love of his life whom he married on February 23, 1962, Jean West Miller; son, Rev. Jeff Miller, wife, Lisa; daughter, Christa Masoner, husband, Don; grandchildren, Jessica Hansel, Brandi Miller Moore, husband, Tim, Jonathan Miller, wife, Amber, Dillon Wines, Alex Wines, wife, Dr. Cara, Rickie Quillen, Levi Masoner, and Macy Masoner; great-grandchildren, Sara Miller, Chance Moore, Sawyer Miller, and Baby Wines on the way, as well as a host of other relatives, friends, and church family.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to be made to a church of your choice in Bill’s memory.

Bill will be laid to rest beside his firstborn in Resthaven Memorial Gardens. A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, February 28, 2024 in the chapel of Resthaven Memorial Gardens, Rev. Jeff Miller and Rev. Michael Allen officiating.
