Everette “Tony” Layman went home to be with our Lord Jesus Christ on January 31, 2025, after complications stemming from pneumonia. It is our firm belief that our father is now in heaven with our mother and his brothers and sisters praising and worshipping our Savior. Tony Layman was born at home in the beautiful countryside of the unincorporated community of Chestnut Hill Tennessee on February 26, 1947, to Woodrow and Willie Blanche Byrd Layman.
Tony grew up on a farm where he was the second youngest of six. Tony would often say, “Growing up there was only one part of the pig we didn’t use. Do you know what that was?... The squeal!” He would then proceed to explain that they didn’t have much but they had the love of the Lord and each other and that’s all they needed.
After graduating from Sevier County High School in Tennessee in 1966 Tony felt a call to serve our country. Tony enlisted into the U.S. Army. During the Vietnam War Tony served in Germany. During his service Tony was never deployed to combat. Tony was a master marksman, and he achieved the rank of Corporal prior to being honorably discharged after four years of service. Upon returning to Tennessee Tony married the love of his life, Judy Marie Phillips, in August of 1970. Tony had a passion for agriculture. He could often be found in a hay, tobacco or corn field. Some of his greatest joys were tending to his garden and cattle. Tony was known as a hard and dedicated worker. He faithfully and loyally worked for the Tennessee Department of Transportation for over thirty years.
Tony was a man that knew his faults. He reflected on those faults often towards the end of his life but above all of those things Tony would want to be remembered a s a man that was sold out for Jesus. Tony would inevitably turn all conversations to Jesus. If you asked him, he would tell you that everything positive in his life was done for God and his family.
Tony was preceded in death by his wife of fifty-four years Judy Phillips Layman; parents Woodrow and Blanche Byrd Layman; brothers Philemon Layman, Lowell Layman (Delores) and Buford Layman; sisters Joann Chambers and Sharon Simms; nephews Scott and Doug Layman.
Tony is survived by his daughter Wendy (Mike), son Brennan (Jacinda); grandchildren Selena (Jason), Athena (Michael), Brody, Elijah, Wyatt, Quentin and Journie; great-grandchildren Asher and Iris. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law Linda Layman, Lynn Wallace, Amy Farmer (David), Thelma Herron (Richard) and Grace Griffin; brothers-in-law Fred Simms, Don Phillips (Kay), Larry Phillips (Laura) and Bruce Phillips (Ramona); nieces Leslie Voiles, Jennifer Henry, Christie Botts, Cindy Latham, Sherry Sprouse, Nancy Stuckey, Michelle Stefanik, Rebecca Rosario; nephews Todd Layman, Shannon Simms and Barry Simms and many other great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins. We would like to give special thanks to those who sent Tony cards, called him or visited him and we would like to give a special thanks to those who have prayed for and are praying for our family.
The service will be held at grave side at Rest Haven Memorial Gardens in Dandridge Tennessee on Tuesday February 4, 2025, at 3 pm with Pastor Zane Stuart officiating.
