Herman Eugene Sutherland, age 81, passed away Thursday, October 10, 2024 after a battle with cancer. Gene was a U.S. Army Veteran. He was proud of his time as a soldier and never lost his love of country and family. He served in Vietnam and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross on September 24, 1967 for outstanding courage and devotion beyond the call of duty. While in Vietnam he served as crew chief of a helicopter ambulance, supporting infantry operations.
He worked and retired at Lenzing Fibers after thirty years and enjoyed retirement at his Tennessee Mountain home with his animals.
He was preceded in death by his spouse of thirty – nine years Glenna Sutherland who passed away in November of 2000; Mother Myrtle Elizabeth Ashby-Brown who passed away in January of 2014. He is survived by his daughter and son - in - law Lisa & Rick H. Francis of Newport ;special niece Sandy Babel of Johnson City; brother-in- law Arlis Junior McNealy and spouse Glenda McNealy of Newport and many other nieces and nephews.
Gene was a husband, father, uncle and brother-in-law as well as a friend to many. He will be missed by his family and friends but most of all, he has been reunited with his soulmate Glenna.
Services for close family and friends will be held on Wednesday October, 16th from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Resthaven Memorial Gardens Chapel Mausoleum with burial to follow in The Veterans Garden of Valor at Resthaven Memorial Gardens with military honors.
