Lorene J. Coursey, beloved wife, teacher, friend, and loving servant, passed away on Friday, December 27, 2024 after a courageous battle with Alzheimers. Lorene was born August 11, 1945 to Kathleen Wright Johnson and Thomas Allen Johnson in Cordelle, GA. She graduated from Crisp County High School and from Georgia Southern College with degrees in English education. She taught high school literature and grammar in Columbia County for 30 years, where she made lots of lifelong friends. Lorene served for many years in various areas of ministry at her churches, and was last a member of First Baptist of Dandridge. Her strong Christian faith provided a source of guidance and comfort throughout her life. In her retirement, Lorene continued her love of golf and traveling, and her desire to golf near the Smokies prompted their move to East Tennessee.
Lorene was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Richard Johnson and Dewey Johnson, and sister Irma McBryant. She is survived by her loving husband of 52 years Marvin H. Coursey, sister Ava Hrodey (Jim), brother-in-law Robert Coursey (Priscilla), sister-in-law Beth Booth (Scott), as well as many nieces and nephews. Lorene’s kind and gentle counsel will be sorely missed by family and friends.
A special thanks to caregivers at UT Hospice, Serenity House, Ms. Ann Rogers and Ms. Bobbi Parker.
